The Real Annual Cost of Keeping an Alaska Business Website Online

A transparent annual cost example covering domains, hosting, premium tools and optional care plans, plus which expenses static delivery can and cannot remove.

A website proposal often displays one large number: the design and development fee. That number is not the total cost of owning a website. Alaska business owners should also review renewals, hosting, connected services, security responsibilities and content support.

Four common cost categories

  • Domain: A common planning allowance is $10–$30 per year, but renewals vary by extension and registrar, and promotional first-year prices can be misleading.
  • Hosting: A broad conventional planning range is $5–$100+ per month. Eligible pre-rendered assets may be delivered on a free-tier static host; dynamic functions and higher service levels have separate terms.
  • Premium integrations: Some tools cost $50–$500+ annually, but booking, payment processing, CRMs, media storage and email tools can cost more or charge transaction fees.
  • Maintenance or care: A general $50–$300 per month allowance can help budget for outside help, though actual scope and agency pricing vary. This is not a FOURAK retainer quote.

An illustrative three-year scenario

Consider a $20 annual domain, $20 monthly hosting plan, $200 of annual tool subscriptions and a $100 monthly support arrangement. Ongoing expenses would be $1,660 a year or $4,980 over three years, excluding the original build, content projects, payment fees and price increases. Removing any line item depends on the business's actual needs; the arithmetic is a planning example, not a market survey or a guaranteed savings figure.

Where static-first can reduce complexity

Pre-rendered public pages do not need WordPress core and plugin updates or a production content database. Cloudflare's Pages documentation currently says static asset requests are free and unlimited on its free and paid plans, with limits and pricing for builds and functions. That is different from claiming that every website and integration has free infrastructure forever. See Cloudflare's own Pages pricing rules.

What static-first cannot erase

Your domain must be renewed. Appointment scheduling, commerce, authentication, analytics products, email delivery, file storage or business-specific backend features may have costs. Accessibility reviews, copy updates and periodic checks are still work. An account on GitHub and Cloudflare is portable in principle, but a well-documented handover requires actual access, build instructions and the configuration for each integration.

Five questions to send every agency

  1. What will I pay each year after launch, including renewals?
  2. Which vendors bill me directly and which are bundled into the agency contract?
  3. What happens if I cancel your retainer?
  4. Who controls the registrar, repository, hosting and payment accounts?
  5. Can another qualified developer rebuild and deploy the website using the delivered files?
